I Have Learned Miracles

Ensemble

by Danielle Alexich

Forest Avenue at dusk.
Quill tips of two Italian cypress
sway in the wind
to Leonard Cohen’s musky voice
playing on my car radio.
Dark green dancers with modest roots
a thousand kisses deep.
Lean left, then right.
Talon branches performing
a sad and beautiful ballet.

I have learned miracles.
When darkness tries to eat us alive,
we suffer together in love.
The world is broken to pieces,
and stars write tiny glass poems.
Towering silhouettes invite me
to recover what I reach for
in my secret life–
Music, forgiveness, a ragged hallelujah.
